"For many years now, this 76 year old body endured muscle aches in the lower back, on the right hand side, if I bent over only for a few minutes. I'd have to straighten up and arch my back for awhile to relieve ache.

Then at the beginning of every golf season, each day for the first 5-6 rounds, I'd come home and by the time I got there the muscles in my back were in knots and I was in excruciating pain. I was buying those Thermacare Heat Wraps for the back by the dozen. Frequently I'd wind up in the ER where I'd get the doctor to prescribe some muscle relaxants and a good anti inflammatory. After the season wore on and my back got used to all that twisting and turning I'd be all right again for the rest of the year. Unless, that is, I bent and lifted something relatively heavy, twisting while making that exertion. Then it was back to Thermacare!

This winter I decided enough is enough so I went to Marino's physical therapists and told them I wanted to strengthen those muscles in my back and asked what exercises I needed to do. It didn't turn out to be that easy because they gave me quite a going over and then told me I needed to strengthen my core. That led to a 45 minute workout, 3 times a week plus a bunch of stretching and exercises to do at home every day. Especially tucking my stomach in. But it worked! My back hasn't felt this strong and loose in years. Plus I'm standing and walking now and everyone thinks I've lost some weight. And I can do the dishes now (my wife makes me!) without pain. And so far this season, no problems from playing golf either. In fact, I am so pleased I convinced my wife to go there to exercise her wrist which was broken and set at the end of February. "I started physical therapy at Marino Therapy Center in Oak Ridge. Due to cervical neck surgery (3 ruptured disks replaced and plated) I had lost much movement in my neck, my shoulders hurt and were stiff all the time, and my left arm was numb most of the time. Due to the lack of movement in my neck, it was even hazardous for me to try to merge into traffic.

After 8 weeks of therapy, I now can move my neck almost as good as someone who has never had surgery. My shoulder pain is gone and my left arm rarely gets numb. Without the help of Marino Therapy Center, I would have continued to worsen and my body would have seemed aged beyond its years. Now I am back to moving better than I have for a very long time since years before surgery. My surgery was the direct result of a severe fall I took over 8 years ago which resulted in numbness & pins & needles in my feet very badly and my legs, arms, and hands.

I personally thank everyone at the Marino Center Oak Ridge because of all of them are wonderful people. The sessions with each have helped my body to get back into a good physical state which I had not experienced in years. "After having two frozen shoulders within two years, you might imagine the shoulder pain I have been through. If it had not been for the Marino Therapy Center in South Knoxville, I would never have made it. When the first shoulder had frozen up after cancer surgery in 2007, the therapists there (Micki, Jennifer and Mary) worked really hard to get that shoulder to release but it wasn't possible so I had orthoscopic surgery and then came right back to them where they worked with me steadily and constantly encourage me not to give up and sure enough that shoulder got better! Then in 2008 when my other shoulder started acting up, I opted to have the surgery first and then knew I would go right back to my friends at the South Knoxville Therapy Center. This time I have been working with Micki and Teia and both have been great in helping me to stay focused and to have patience as from experience I knew this shoulder rehabilitation takes a good while. Now my time is almost up with them and although I just as soon not have shoulder trouble any more, I will miss seeing them.

"February 24, 2008 I underwent surgery to reattach a ruptured proximal biceps tendon. From a statistical perspective I was not the typical candidate for this procedure, as I was older than the recommended ideal age. Two weeks after surgery, and while still in a sling, my orthopedic surgeon prescribed physical therapy. I had no previous need of, or knowledge of, physical therapy centers, so I asked for a recommendation. I am very pleased that they referred me to Marino TC. I started out slowly and cautiously. The initial sessions weren't without discomfort. But, after a short time I developed confidence in the therapist (Brian, Cedar Bluff) I worked with. Perhaps the biggest obstacle to overcome was the fear that if I moved my arm beyond some point it would undo the surgery. I think this is the greatest attribute a physical therapist can have is conveying that reassurance that the healing process requires that the rehabilitated appendage must be manipulated and exercised. "Because of severe TMJ my dentist sent me to an oral surgeon who then referred me to your office. I am grateful for that referral because Dina and Dianne taught me to carry and move my neck and jaw so that I did not suffer the pain and clicks resulting from TMJ. "I developed lymphedema in my right leg and was worried about it because not only was it painful, but it looked ugly. I went to one therapy center who did nothing to relieve my problem. I was then referred to MTC because I was advised that the Center had someone who was specifically certified in the treatment of Lymphedema.
